A long-stored 1965 Ford F-100 returned to dependable, road-going condition at Imperial Motorworks — separated from its chassis, stripped and refinished in striking red, its 5.0 V8 and gearbox fully rebuilt and resealed, and its character carefully preserved. An American classic, brought back to European workshop standards.
When this 1965 Ford F-100 arrived at the atelier, it had stood still for many years. The truck was fundamentally complete, but time, storage and decades of honest work had left their mark. The brief was not simply to make it run again — it was to return one of America's most characterful pickups to dependable, road-going condition without erasing the history written into it.
The restoration began by separating the cab from the chassis, opening up the areas that can never be properly inspected or refinished while the body is in place. Stripped back, the cab and its surrounding components were sandblasted to remove old paint, corrosion and the contamination of years off the road. Only once that clean foundation was established was the metalwork prepared, primed and refinished in the truck's striking red.
Mechanically, the F-100 needed genuine work. The V8 was lifted out and comprehensively overhauled, then fully resealed to cure the oil leaks that age inevitably brings and to give it dependable service for years to come. The gearbox received the same discipline — removed, inspected, overhauled and resealed before being refitted.
Removing the engine and transmission proved to be one of the project's defining challenges. The geometry of the front suspension, and the crossmember in particular, made the usual route from underneath impossible. Both assemblies had to be drawn out through the front and top of the truck instead — a sequence that demanded careful planning and a precise hand to protect everything around them.
With the major assemblies restored, the work turned to the countless smaller things that quietly consume most of a proper restoration. Every mounting point, bracket, fixture and fastening was inspected, refurbished where needed and refitted. Individually they go unnoticed; together they are the difference between a truck that has been restored and one that has merely been repaired.
The electrical and auxiliary systems were brought back to life as well. Both horns were repaired and returned to full working order — the standard road horn and the distinctive "chicken scarer" that has always been part of this truck's personality. Small details, but the ones that keep a classic true to itself.
Inside, the original white interior gave way to a deep black finish — more purposeful, more masculine, and a natural foil to the vibrant red outside. The contrast sits squarely in the timeless American-truck idiom while lifting the whole atmosphere of the cab. Throughout, the changes were kept sympathetic to the truck's period, never straying into anything that would feel too modern.
Reassembled, the F-100 was treated to fresh fluids throughout, a full service and extensive testing. Systems that had lain dormant for years were recommissioned, adjusted and verified until dependable operation was beyond doubt.
A long-stored classic returned to the road is never the work of a single rebuild or a fresh coat of paint. It is the sum of thousands of individual decisions, repairs and refinements that turn a dormant vehicle back into one that can genuinely be driven and enjoyed. Today this 1965 Ford F-100 stands as exactly that — mechanical reliability, visual presence and authentic character together, in one of America's most iconic pickups.
